New Treatment of ADHD Now Available
Incorporating biofeedback technology into focused, cognitive-behaviour therapy techniques, a treatment plan that is highly focused is now available for children, adolescents and adults with ADHD. Using sophisticated software that is designed to lower central nervous system activity and create a heightened sense of calm assurance makes it possible, in many cases, for people with ADHD to improve attention, concentration and lower distractibility.
Research has identified some physical parameters that seem to be associated with a state of calm emotions and increased self-confidence. These measures, known as heart rate variability measures can be quantified using computer software. A training programme with on-screen video and audio feedback is used over 6-8 session and home practice. The research indicates that people who practice the breathing and relaxation techniques over the short course of treatment improve on a number of variables such as:
o Reduced inner tension
o Increased task focus
o Fewer interpersonal conflicts
o Lessened distractibility
o Improved school performance
o Improves the ability to play cooperatively at home and school
How Does It Work?
Heart rhythms are monitored by the use of an sensor attached to the earlobe or a finger. The sensor transmits pulse signals to a digitiser which translates them into data interpreted by software. The software provides both audio and visual feedback that enables the participant to alter their state of arousal to create higher variability coherence. The method is pleasant and simple and can be easily mastered by adults and children alike.
