Thanks for this post. It can be challenging dealing with troubled teens. A lot of the problems you mentioned should not be taken lightly. Depression is a serious illness that affects adolescents just like it does adults. I’ve found their website to be a useful source of information about treatments for adolescent depression

Hi there, it's good to know that one of my former students is still learning from me. Life-long learning in the modern society, that's what we are after here in the Republic.

I'm delighted to hear from you Ms. Inisowen and do hope you will continue to read, and benefit from, my blogs.

Hi David,

I love your articles, as i am an s.n.a in a secondary school i understand about students slipping through the system. As a mother of an 11 year old girl that attends a country school, I've had so many battles with the school to get her tested. Thank god for my training through the Frobel college that i was able to recognise the signs of dyslexia. She was tested eventully ,she scored at the 2nd percentile she got learning support with a group. After 2 years of learning support I got her tested privately, it was recommended that she needed resource and a laptop and an irish exp. Once again the school told me she wasn't entitled to any of this. I ended up sending a complaint to D.E.S. I didn't get much support from them either (got the run around) but she did get her resource and laptop. we still have so many problems with her,we also have emotional and behavioural problems. we are waiting to get her tested for Dyspraxia. As both my nieces have Dyspraxia .
I just want to thank you for your work and your books which i have a few, and to let other parents know to keep up the battle, if we don't no one else will

Hi Dr Carey, I have a 12 year old daughter who has recently been diagnosed as having a mild GLD, OCD, and "AUTISTIC TENDENCIES"??. and if i may say the waiting list is just ridicilous in this country. (6 yrs) we are on the waiting list and i just couldn't wait so i got my daughters diagonses going private. No teacher has ever picked up on any academic struggles, only that my daughter was labled as a" difficult "and "bold" child. When actual fact she was been bullied and still is bullied. We (her parents) were told by this psychologist that our daughter would be able to enter sheltered employment when she leaves school. I personally i am delighted she will have some outlook on life and she'll have her own independance. But at the moment she's attending mainstream school and recieves help from a resource taecher. But i feel thats just not enough as she's only been diagnosed in recent weeks and i think she's so far behind already. We want whats best for her and we were thinking the option of a special school. as her teacher doesn't have much patience with her. The principal also reccomends a special school as they could cater better for her needs. But i do 100% agree that mainstream schools don't want the bother of a student with a disability. And thats why those children are the real people who suffer. The likes of Bat O'Keeffe should hang his head in shame!!
I have a 10-year-old son with Asperger Syndrome, which was diagnosed in the UK, before we moved to Ireland. Over there, he received psychotherapy and occupational therapy, and we had the ongoing support of a multi-disciplinary team, led by a consultant psychiatrist at our local CAMHS. Now, after an 18-month wait for a CAMHS appointment here, we're told he has no mental health issues, so they can't help us. There is no access to OT, either through CAMHS or community-based. Beechpark was mentioned, but I'm certain it wouldn't be appropriate for my son to be in a special school. The only useful thing to come out of our recent meeting with a CAMHS psychologist was the suggestion that we look into the Centre for Talented Youth.

My son's school is doing what it can, and I have to say that his teacher is very good, but with the best will in the world, they have neither the expertise nor the funding to meet all his needs.

Hi David,

As a past student I am keeping a watch on your blog! You'll be please to know that we have a fantastice garden with hens and guinea pigs that have changed the behaviours of two children with ADHD and Asperger's. (to the better) I'm currently trying to get funding for more allotment beds. Come and visit anytime at St Brigid's NS Stillorgan. Spring would be best as it all looks a bit bare at present.

Regards
